South Carolina
The South Carolina flag features a blue bird with a white palmetto tree in the center and a white crescent moon in the upper left-hand corner. This design has deep historical roots, dating back to the American Revolutionary War. The palmetto tree symbolizes the defense of Fort Moultrie, where palmetto logs were used to withstand British cannon fire. The crescent moon, originally part of the uniforms of South Carolina troops, represents the state's early fight for independence. The flag flown today was officially adopted on January 26, 1861.
